Storyboard research: 5 Centimeters per second by Makoto Shinkai

5 Centimeters per second by Makoto Shinkai

5 Centimeters per second is an animation by Mokoto Shinkai who is a famous 'all-in-one' film director, producer, writer, animator, voice actor and manga artist in Japan. This movie is almost produced all by himself and due to this crazy talent he has won a lot of awards for his great achievement. The storyboards above are classic and very organised where the frames and the notes are almost 1:1 ratio. Since this animation has not much script, most of the messages are presented visually which makes the illustrations the most important.  The contineous frames allows a nice flow of the story and there are also  different camera angles to gradually build up the atmosphere between the characters and within the animation. Compare this storyboard with the Pixar storyboard, I will prefer Pixar's due to the bold illustrations and the lively presentation. There are also more frames with in a second in order to build up the tense and excitement in the animation.
