Before I received the finished barn from Joe, I decided to work on the walking cycle which does not really need a background to work with and this save time later on when we need them to walk from place to place.
I was not really sure how to start the animating and the method learnt from last year is forgotten. Nevertheless, it is just like drawing the move on paper, key framing the important poses and maya will cleverly fill in the action in between for me! I change the easing using the graph editor so as to make the walk smooth and remove the easing of the walk.
It takes me about half a day to achieve a good-looking walk...it has been a long time since the last walking cycle and animating the walking cycle makes me want to draw on paper so badly. Comparing drawing with maya, maya requires more precision in every angle but in other word it is easier to spot the wrong pose because it enable me to view in different perspective and zoom.
Play blast of the young pig walking. I am happy with the walking although it is not walking really perfectly, this is the best one I got so far in 6 six hours. The legs and the the swing of the hands definitely need to be improved when I have time later on and also avoid the same mistake when animating the strong pig.
Eventually the two pigs are in the barn and I experiment with different things like place them in the barn to see if the style matching and the lighting etc.
It is very dim inside the barn because there are no light whereas they are sunlight outside which the characters can hardly be seen. Joe suggests to add light bulbs that can light up the interior which could be done by the growing option in toon and add a light underneath the bulb shown by Mat.
They look very cinematic in the render view and add some war-like atmosphere to the scene. I choose to place the camera at this position because it can pan down, showing the interior and all the characters also introducing the event from top to bottom. I want to make the pig walk more naturally and have a personally in their walk which can be done by acting like them! I want the strong pig to walk heavier than the rest and the young pig walks in tiny steps.
Rendering 10 frames of this scene takes 2 hours...Although this is only an experiment and quality does not matter, it makes me wonder how long will it take to render a high quality finish piece and I want to save a good range of time for rendering. In order to do this, more work need to be done this week. Me and Joe have already divide the storyboard into 16 parts and each of us is doing 8 scenes, we are quite ahead so this leave us about a week to do some house keep stuffs and render.
