After modelling the basic body of the three pigs, they need to have different characteristics in order to play their role in the story. There are three totally different pig in terms of their size, role and emotions so that different clothing is needed. The smart pig is the role of wisdom and according to the character design Joe did, he designed it base on the clever character stereotype which means very geeky and have a big head.
After that, I started to make the helmet for the strong pig. Joe wants him to be solider-like and rather muscular compare to the rest therefore I will enlarge his chest and the body will not be as round as the other pigs. At the beginning, I halved the sphere and duplicate and reduce its size so as to form the inner layer of the helmet (kind of an interpretation of the eye sockets I learnt from the demo model character) then extrude the edges to give the helmet more volume.
I was not sure about the shape of the helmet so I went online for reference. There are a huge amount of war helmet and they all have thin edges...
Eventually I have chosen this reference to work on because it looks simple and very common to see in films or historical pictures. In order to make thin edges on the helmet, I reduce the thickness of it and add an extra edge loop to make the shape more define in smooth preview.
I hesitated about whether the ears should penetrate through the helmet... a few tests were carried out; The helmet is too big for the pig's head if no ears are shown; remove the ears did not feel right.
